His Life: An Iconic Comedian

Paresh Rawal is a noted Indian actor and a brilliant comedian active in Bollywood since 1985. He is also a member of parliament in the Lok Sabha from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and represents the Ahmedabad East Constituency.

He was mischievous as a kid and enjoyed making people laugh:

Paresh was born on May 30, 1950 in Mumbai in a Gujarati family. His father was Dahyalal Rawal.

He did his schooling from Maharashtra SSC Board School and graduation from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics in Vile Parle, Mumbai.

Paresh Rawal married former Miss India Swaroop Sampat and the couple has two sons, Aditya Rawal and Anirudh Rawal.

In his career spanning over three decades, he has acted in more than two hundred movies:

Rawal made his debut with the 1985 film Arjun. It was the 1986 hit Naam that established him as a noted actor in the Hindi film industry. He then appeared in more than 100 films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, mostly in the role of the main villain. He appeared in famous movies such as Kabzaa (1988), Ram Lakhan (1989), King Uncle (1993), Roop ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993), Daud (1997) and others. In 1994, he acted in the slapstick comedy film Andaz Apna Apna in which he did a double role.

Rawal played a dim-witted and kind-hearted Marathi landlord named Baburao Ganpatrao Apte in Hera Pheri (2000) who takes in Raju (played by Akshay Kumar) and Shyam (played by Sunil Shetty) as paying guests in his house. For his exemplary performance, he won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award. He repeated his role as Baburao in the sequel to the film Phir Hera Pheri in 2006, which was also a huge success. Another notable lead role from him came in 2002 when he played one of three blind bank robbers in the film Aankhen which starred Aditya Pancholi, Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Arjun Rampal and Sushmita Sen.

Since 2000, Paresh Rawal has appeared mainly in comedy oriented multi-starrer movies such as Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Hulchul (2004), Deewane Huye Paagal (2005), Garam Masala (2005), The Malamaal Weekly (2006), Golmaal Fun Unlimited (2006), Chup Chup Ke (2006), Bhagam Bhag (2007), Mere Baap Pehle Aap (2008) and De Dana Dan (2009). In 2010, Rawal acted in Aakrosh, based on honor killing. In 2012, he played the lead role in the super hit OMG – Oh My God!.

For television, he has produced Hindi serials like Teen Bahuraaniyaan and Laagi Tujhse Lagan. One of his future projects includes a documentary based on the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He has earned many awards over the years for his performance:

In 1994, he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie Woh Chokri. In 1996, he won the Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor for Raja. He won many awards for Hera Pheri including the Filmfare Best Comedian Award, Zee Cine Award for the Best Actor in a Comic Role and Star Screen Award for Best Comedian. In 2003, he again won many awards for his role in Awara Paagal Deewana including the Filmfare Best Comedian Award, Star Screen Award for Best Comedian and Zee Cine Award for the Best Actor in a Comic Role. He was awarded the Apsara Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role for Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (2010). He received the prestigious Padma Shri in 2014 for his contribution to the film industry.
