A beautiful diva who has made millions of hearts crazy over her acting and dance, famously known as the Dhak Dhak Girl, Madhuri Dixit is a famous Bollywood star. Best known for her mesmerizing acting and dancing skills, She has been nominated a record 14 times for Filmfare Awards for Best Actress and winning four times. She was one of the reigning actresses of the Hindi cinema from the 1980s, 1990s and, early 2000s.

Madhuri Shankar Dixit was born to Shankar Dixit and Snehlata Dixit on May 15, 1967. The youngest of the two sisters Bharati and Rupa and a b rother Ajit, Madhuri was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Madhuri has had a normal upbringing and was trained in the Kathak dance style during her school years and for which she received many awards. Madhuri was very passionate about dancing since her childhood. She has been dancing since she was three years old.

Personal Life

Madhuri Dixit attended Divine Child High School as a child and studied Microbiology at the Parle College, Mumbai. She married Shriram Madhav Nene, a cardiovascular surgeon in 1999. Dr. Nene had no idea of the popularity of his wife in her homeland, since he had been brought up abroad. It was in USA that she had her two sons Arin in 2003 and Ryan in 2005. Madhuri continued to enjoy her role as a mother of two lively sons and a doctor’s wife.

Career  Journey

Madhuri Dixit made her acting debut in 1984 film Abodh, which wasn’t a hit, but she received praises from critics for her acting. Till 1988 she appeared in eight movies that were underperformer in box office. Finally, her breakthrough came with Tezaab in 1988 for which she was nominated for the Best Actress Filmfare Award. In this movie, she shared the screen with Actor Anil Kapoor, and got famous as Ek Do Teen Girl, after the super success of the item number song ‘Ek..Do..Teen..’

In 1989, she gave another blockbuster film Ram Lakhan with Tezaab actor Anil Kapoor. She worked in a multi starrer movie Tridev as well. After That, She starred in 1990 film Dil opposite Aamir Khan, which was a massive hit and fetched her first Filmfare Best Actress Award. The success of Dil catapulted her career and established her as one of the mainstream actresses. She delivered another blockbuster in 1991 Saajan starring alongside Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

She starred opposite to Anil Kapoor in Beta which became the highest grossing film of Bollywood in 1992 winning five Filmfare awards including Best Actress for Madhuri. The song ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’ featuring Madhuri became one of the most popular songs of the decade and she got her nickname the Dhak Dhak girl. In one of the biggest hits of the Bollywood ever, she starred in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! opposite Salman Khan. Released in 1994 the movie broke all the records and set a new benchmark of moviemaking in the industry.

The film won five Filmfare awards including Best Actress for Madhuri. The movie broke the record of film Sholey, and was screened for 7 years in all theatres! After her marriage in 1999 she moved to Denver, USA and took a break from Bollywood for some time. She reappeared in 2006 in a dance film Aaja Nachle which wasn’t successful, though her performance received critical acclaim. She relocated to Mumbai in 2011 and did Dedh Ishqiya.

Apart from being a phenomenal actor, she is also an acclaimed dancer. Madhuri has demonstrated her exemplary dancing skills in many movies. In 2014, she started an online dancing academy Dance With Madhuri to share her expertise of dancing with people. The famous Kathak dancer Pt. Birju Maharaj has choreographed her for the song ‘Kaahe Chhedhe’ in Movie Devdas.

Awards and Recognition

In her career spanning over three decades Madhuri has been felicitated with numerous accolades for her acting. In 2001, she was named among the Top Five Most Powerful Indian Movie Stars by Forbes. In the same year she received the National Citizen Award for her contribution to the cinema. In 2008, Government of India awarded her with the Padma Shri for her contribution to the Indian cinema. In 2011, She was awarded Filmfare Special Award on the completion of 25 years in film industry.

She was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in India in 2014. Her upcoming Movies are Total Dhamaal, the sequel of 2011 film Double Dhamaal, Bucket List, an Indian Marathi film and Kalank. The movie Kalank, starred Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sanjay Dutt. Apart from this, Madhuri also spend her time for social cause. She has become an Organ Donor too.
